I have a pretty good system worked out for planning a video shoot. And it really makes things run quickly and smoothly when we get on our actual location. Also, our friends (actors) love it because, since we break up the dialogue with multiple camera angles, we usually only shoot a line or two at a time, which means they never have to memorize (or even read) a script before they show up to shoot a video with us.
It Starts With Sketches
When I write a script, I try to keep it short and get to the good stuff as quickly as possible
Then I diagram the few different camera angles we will use for each scene
Then I break down the dialogue into smaller parts which represent separate shots
I assign each part to a different angle so actors don’t have to memorize all their lines at once
To speed things up when we shoot, I reorder the shots, grouping similar shots together
Plus I make detailed notes about props, costume changes, etc. so nothing is left to chance
